Hawkie?

Time has faded memories, but some vaguely remember the local legend that deep under the Mohawk River flows another river that is bigger and more majestic than the one we see everyday. Maybe it was just a local Dutch settler or an Indian warrior telling a tale. The facts are probably lost forever, but State naturalists say the hidden river may be the source for the seemingly friendly creature spotted along the docks of our beautiful Greater Amsterdam Riverlink Park.

Others have suggested that maybe Champie has traveled down from Lake Champlain or the creature from Loch Ness has made its way across the ocean and up the Hudson River. Neither of the latter ideas seems to fit our situation. Those who have actually spotted the new arrival all agree it appears to be porpoise like or maybe like the fish on the tuna commercial, Charlie. It sports a very large pair of sunglasses and appears to be wearing a head set. When seen on the dock, it appeared to be listening and dancing to music as if from the head set.

One astute observer suggested that the creature, which is always smiling, is probably attracted to the Park because of all the musical entertainment heard over the last several years. Another suggested it could be the aroma of food cooking at Riverlink Café, maybe it likes ice cream! Someone else thought that since it seems so friendly, it may be trying to make friends with all the Park visitors.

Whatever the reason for its appearance, lets all welcome Hawkie. Don’t be the only person around who hasn’t met our latest arrival.

Did you Know?
   The present Erie Canal is
 the Mohawk River?
   The Mohawk was tamed
and locks added to most of
the length of this river and
 is actually the third channel
to be called the Erie Canal.
